As many of you will have completed your applications, you will be waiting for a date for your interview and audition. However, what lies beyond securing a place at University? Many believe that, having received notification of acceptance, it’s enough to wait until September when the course commences and teaching starts. Most students find the transition into University academic life quite difficult. Two of the main areas that cause issues are to do with reading arguments and theoretical frameworks. If you are going to go to University whether in a year from now of even five years from now, give yourself a good start by doing some reading in these areas. But just don’t read. Learn to understand. The value of theory or theories are as ‘thinking ‘tools. As ways of seeing. Here are some links to get you started.

An interesting article for all you industry watchers. It seems that only in popular music are you expected to be young. In every other style and throughout history, composers and performers have worked on into their dotage or death. Consider replacing the words ‘music industry’ with author, artist, film/theatre actor and so on. I doubt you’ll find quite the same arguments being used.

History of Black British Jazz

Noticed this article on the Telegraph website.

Some of the comments are naturally outraged but one in particular that claims that there were no black jazz musicians and bands working in Britain until after WWII is clearly wrong. Quite a few years prior to WWII there was a band leader by the name of Ken Johnson. His nickname was ‘Snakehips’, and he even had his own radio show on the BBC broadcast from Cafe de Paris. The reason that so very few know about him is because he was killed during the blitz whilst performing.

Somerset House What Next 2010

It’s that time of year again and What Next 2010 will be starting shortly at Somerset. Auditions have been held over the past few weeks around London and yesterday all participants got together to meet for the first time.

They’ll be supporting N-Dubz on 11th July 2010 at Somerset House who came to meet them all yesterday (June 1st 2010). Also there were C4 who are making a documentary about N-Dubz, Radio 1 and journalists from Evening Standard. Look out for the article in today’s Standard.

Graduate Shows – Cargo May 2010 – Congratulations

A big thank you and congratulations to all of the participants at our graduate shows, held at Cargo, May 2010.

The nights were really enjoyable, dynamic and diverse music performances that would put many ‘pros’ to shame.

Special thanks to technical crew both from the University and at Cargo for their assistance.

Provisional dates are in for next year and they’ll Monday 16th, Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th May, so make a date for your diaries.
